National Geographic Travel has embarked on an expansion that includes the launch of a travel programming block, tapping new executives, the launch of a luxury edition of National Geographic Traveler magazine, and the development of a custom content project called National Geographic Travel Lab.

National Geographic Travel has named Nathan Philpot to serve as director of National Geographic Expeditions Europe & Africa, responsible for launching consumer travel experiences across Europe and Africa. Andrew Nelson has been tapped to lead the newly formed NG Travel Lab, a provider of custom content, distribution and marketing solutions.

Next month, National Geographic Traveler magazine will launch its first luxury edition, which will be distributed to 350,000 National Geographic subscribers. And, on TV, the National Geographic Channel starting in July will air two hours of travel-related programming every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. EST.
