Vermont tourism Web site spotlights commissionable plans

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- The Vermont Department of Tourism & Marketing is offering a variety of packages on its Web site that are commissionable to agents.

"While the Internet has created more direct access for the consumer to hotels, airlines and destinations, we recognize the critical role that travel agents continue to play in the industry," said Tom Altemus, commissioner of the department.

"Agents provide access to countless potential clients," he said, "who otherwise would be inaccessible with our limited advertising budget."

Agents who visit the site, at www.1-800-vermont.com, can view details on the packages, which are labeled commissionable.

A Simple Pleasure plan at Four Columns Inn in Newfane, for example, covers a two-night stay; breakfast, one dinner for two and a half-hour massage, priced from $195 per person, double.

In addition to including agent bookings on the site, the tourism department recently completed a series of agent training sessions, called Discover New England. It also created the Vermont Travel Specialist program, which provides ongoing training.

Agents can find out more by calling (802) 828-5905.
