A Miami jury awarded Carnival Corp. $24 million Wednesday in its lawsuit against Rolls-Royce over the pod-propulsion system on Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2.
Carnival Corp. was awarded $16 million for eight counts of fraud and $8 million for breach-of-repair warranties.
In 2008, Carnival Corp. filed suit against Rolls-Royce for damages arising from a defective propulsion system on the Queen Mary 2. Carnival Corp. sued for $100 million.
Carnival Corp. claimed that Rolls-Royce defrauded the company into the "selection, acceptance and continued use" of the Mermaid pod-propulsion system, and that malfunctions caused repeated interruptions of cruises.
Almost a year ago, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. reached a settlement with Rolls-Royce over the pod-propulsion system on Celebrity Cruises' Millennium-class ships.
Last week, Crystal Cruises became the third cruise company to file suit against the makers of the Mermaid pod-propulsion system, alleging that Crystal has been and will continue to be "severely damaged as a result of repeated repairs and replacements caused by malfunctions of the Mermaid propulsion system."
