Cruise ship carpets don't last forever -- or do they?

Holland America Line is upcycling its old carpets into coasters, which are now available as cruise souvenirs sold onboard.

HAL has produced 12,000 coasters so far with carpets from three vessels collected in the last two years.

But the cruise line isn't stopping at coasters. HAL also plans to turn carpet into notebooks, postcards, door signs, artwork and more.

The coasters are exclusively for sale onboard and feature blue floral patterns. An explanation on the back is titled "I used to be a carpet."

"While we recognize that this doesn't solve all waste-related challenges, it addresses the issues and aims to find circular solutions for the future," the coaster says.

To produce the coasters, HAL partnered with Danish carpet manufacturer Dansk Wilton, which has a sustainability-focused initiative to repurpose carpet waste.
