Malala Yousafzai
Malala Yousafzai will be the godmother of the Celebrity Edge,
a ship due in late 2018.
Yousafzai is a 19-year-old Pakistani woman who received the
Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy of girls' education. She came to prominence for
writing a blog about the subject as an 11-year-old living in a Taliban-occupied
area of her country.
In 2012, she was severely injured and nearly died when a
Taliban gunman shot her on a bus. Since then, she has become a prominent
education activist. She founded the nonprofit Malala Fund and in 2013
co-authored "I am Malala," an international bestseller.
In 2014, she was announced as the co-recipient of the Nobel
Peace Prize and was the youngest recipient ever at 17 years old.
As well as naming Yousafzai godmother, Celebrity announced a
two-year partnership to support and promote the Malala Fund.
"Partnering with Malala Fund was a natural fit as we
share the same passion and commitment to an incredible cause," Celebrity
CEO and president Lisa Lutoff-Perlo said.
"Malala is an inspiration and a voice of hope,"
said Richard Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, Celebrity's
parent company. "This young woman is on a powerful mission, and we support
it 100 percent."
