Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway, which will begin sailing out of New York next May, will have a Food Network star heading three of its restaurants and three Broadway hits as part of its onboard entertainment.
Geoffrey Zakarian will run the fine-dining Ocean Blue by Geoffrey Zakarian; The Raw Bar, which will be next to Ocean Blue; and Ocean Blue on the Waterfront, a casual dining option. Norwegian said it hasn't decided if it will charge a dining fee for any or all of the Zakarian restaurants.
Zakarian will use all of the ingredients and techniques that he uses in his land-based restaurants, which include The Lambs Club and The National in New York.
Zakarian won last season’s “The Next Iron Chef, Super Chefs” on Food Network. He also appears on “Iron Chef America,” is a judge on “Chopped” and talks about his favorite foods on “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.”
Rock of Ages, the Broadway hit with a story line built around rock hits of the 1980s, is one of three shows that will be featured on the Breakaway.
Another is “Burn the Floor,” with dancers performing a broad range of ballroom and Latin dances ranging from the tango to the waltz. “Cirque Dreams & Jungle Fantasy” will be a circus spectacular performed in the ship’s Spiegel Tent.
The Breakaway’s Headliners Comedy Club will feature two comedy troupes. One is The Second City, whose alumni include Bill Murray, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tina Fey and Jason Sudeikis, whose mother, Kathy Sudeikis, is a travel agent and former head of ASTA.
A second comedy show is Howl at the Moon, a dueling rock ‘n' roll pianos act.
Slam Allen, who performed at the Jazz & Blues Club on the Norwegian Epic, will be among the musicians playing at Fat Cats Jazz & Blues Club, which will feature jazz and blues every night.
The 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will sail weekly seven-day cruises to Bermuda in the summer. From October through April, the ship will sail to the Bahamas, Florida and the southern Caribbean.
