NEW YORK -- Regal Cruises' Regal Empress was gashed in the bow after hitting the pier in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, a port call on the ship's June 29 New York-Canada sailing.

The gash was temporarily patched in St. Andrews, and the vessel completed its cruise after a delay of a few hours.

The accident caused a hole above the water line and damaged an onboard water tank as well as the St. Andrews pier.

Cruise line officials said that permanent repairs will be made when the ship enters dry dock in October for a previously scheduled $5.5 million upgrade.

Regal offered passengers 25% off their next cruise with the one-ship line.
