Royal Caribbean International upgraded its Crown and Anchor Society loyalty program, basing reward points on the number of nights members cruise and adding two membership tiers.

Passengers now earn points instead of credits. They earn points for each night they sail on a Royal Caribbean ship, and double points if they purchase a suite.

Previously, members earned one credit for each cruise completed, regardless of length or cabin category.

Two new tiers expand the types of perks members receive. Emerald status will provide an interim step between Platinum and Diamond statuses, with bigger savings for balcony and suite cabins and a welcome gift on every cruise.

Pinnacle Club, the new top category, is reserved for members who have taken the equivalent of 100 seven-day cruises (or 100 cruises under the old program). Royal Caribbean said those guests "will be honored for their incredible loyalty" with complimentary cruises at certain milestones, in addition to receiving all the other benefits of the Crown and Anchor program.

The changes are effective Jan. 21.

Royal Caribbean also relaunched the Crown and Anchor Society section of its website to offer greater personalization.

A "Bring a Friend" promotion rewards a $25 onboard credit for introducing new passengers to the cruise line, for bookings made by April 30.
