Royal Caribbean International raised its recommended daily gratuities by $1.50 per day for non-suite cabins and $1 for suites.

Starting Sept. 7, the new recommended guideline will be $16.00 per guest, per day, in staterooms and $18.50 per guest, per day, in suites, the line said.

"The updated gratuity recommendation is in line with industry standards, and it is one of the ways to recognize the cruise line's dedicated crew members, from the staff in restaurants, bars and lounges to stateroom attendants and other hotel services behind the scenes," Royal said.

Daily gratuities are automatically added to passengers accounts, but they are able to change the amount at their discretion.

Guests who book their cruise before Sept. 7 can prepay their gratuities based on the current guideline of $14.50 and $17.50.

Carnival Cruise Line raised gratuities on May 1 to $16.50 per person, per day for suites and $14.50 per person, per day for for standard cabins. Norwegian Cruise Line on April 1 raised its service charge to $20.00 per person per day for The Haven and Suites; $18.00 per person per day for Club Balcony Suites; and $16.00 per person per day for all other cabin types.
