New York City has launched a campaign to promote gay travel.
The yearlong campaign, called the Rainbow Pilgrimage, will emphasize a visit to New York as a "rite of passage" for gay and lesbian travelers, said NYC & Company, New York’s tourism marketing organization.
New York will run print, outdoor and web advertising in the U.S. and in other countries. Digital banners will begin appearing online on April 13 in the U.K., U.S. and Canada. Later in April, New York will launch outdoor ads in the U.K. and Spain. Ads also will appear on bus shelters and street banners in New York.
A Rainbow Pilgrimage print ad will appear in the June/July issue of Out magazine, a gay publication.
NYC & Company also is highlighting Rainbow Pilgrimage vacation packages at www.nycgo.com/gay. Customers can book travel at the site, which is powered by Travelocity.
NYC & Company says the ad campaign commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, violent demonstrations that began on June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, in New York’s Greenwich Village neighborhood.
The riots are often cited as jumpstarting the gay rights movement.
