The Cologne Cathedral, Germany's most visited landmark, will begin charging admission later this year.
Msgr. Guido Assmann, who is responsible for managing the cathedral, said it costs about 16 million euros per year -- about 44,000 euros per day -- to maintain the cathedral's upkeep, an amount that can no longer be reached through donations.
It is unclear when the cathedral will begin charging admission, but it will begin in the second half of the year.
The Cologne Cathedral attracts some 6 million visitors a year.
