La Reserve Eden au Lac Zurich reopened Jan. 8 following a two-year restoration helmed by French designer Philippe Starck.
The belle epoque property is housed in a French Empire-style building that dates to 1909 that is a few blocks from the Zurich Opera House and within walking distance of the city's medieval center.
The majority of the 40 rooms and suites have views of Lake Zurich and many have private balconies or terraces.
The lobby's original wooden staircase and iron elevator have been preserved, the latter with the addition of a glass enclosure, and other design elements include metal accents, exposed original red brick, marble and hardwood floors and blue-and-white-striped awnings on the lake-facing facade.
Stained-glass windows by Ara Starck, the designer's daughter, depict landscapes, and guestrooms feature such nautical touches as wooden oars and paintings of sailboats.
Eateries include the Eden Kitchen & Bar, with an open kitchen and large bay windows overlooking the lake, and the sixth-floor La Muna restaurant, serving a Peruvian-Japanese menu. This spring, the rooftop terrace will serve food and drinks with 360-degree views of the city and the Alps.
The property joins hotelier Michel Reybier's La Reserve collection of hotels in Geneva, Paris and Ramatuelle, France.
