The new luau produced by a Native Hawaiian creative team, Kaula Luau, presents a theatrical performance at the new oceanfront venue Ocean's Edge at Ko Olina, near the harbor on Oahu's west side.
Its opening date is set for Feb. 27.
The luau's show follows the story of a native Hawaiian woman named Mahina, "whose understanding of self is shaped through stories passed down by her grandmother," said the Hawaiian Council, producers of the production. These stories are visually showcased through hula, live music and chant.
"Kaula Luau represents a different way of sharing culture with visitors," said Kuhio Lewis, CEO of the Hawaiian Council. "It is rooted in story, responsibility and Hawaiian voices. This production reflects why our partnership with Ko Olina matters. It creates meaningful opportunities for Hawaiians to lead, to create and to share stories that come from this place while also supporting local jobs and businesses on the West Side of Oahu."
Performances are held Friday through Monday. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. for cultural activities and optional dining, and the main performance begins at 7:30 p.m., concluding at 8:15 p.m. Roundtrip transportation from Waikiki is available for purchase.
Later this year, in December, the Hawaiian Council is also anticipated to debut a second theatrical production, "Hawaiian Goddess: The Epic Tale of Hiiaka" at Ko Olina.
