Las Brisas Huatulco brings new energy to Oaxaca

Back in February -- if you can even remember that far back at this point -- I was blissfully in Mexico on a four-month hiatus that was abruptly cut short due to Covid-19. But before all plans went down the drain, I was able to visit Las Brisas Huatulco, a sprawling beach resort on the lesser-known Costa Oaxaquena -- Oaxaca's stunning coast.

The first thing you notice upon checking in is the energy. Every corner of the resort is designed for relaxation and fun, from the four beaches to the impressive fitness center, kids club and constant entertainment. Each beach has its own vibe. Secret Beach has uninterrupted views out to sea, while Manzanillo Beach is where most of the action happens. It has bar service, palapas and lounge chairs. The resort also happens to have one of the nicest beaches in Huatulco: Tornillo Beach. Ventura Beach is calm and perfect for snorkeling.

There are three pools on the property, as well. One is designed for games and entertainment, while another is nearly Olympic-sized and great for exercise. A third pool is adults-only.

The property's accommodations are spread out across four "towns": Mountains, Stars, Clouds and Ocean. Each town is in a different location around the resort, giving visitors the chance for a different perspective every time they stay.

Rooms start at the Deluxe level, which measure 387 square feet. The largest room category is the Brisas Beach Club Honeymoon Suite, which is 732 square feet and comes with its own private balcony and whirlpool.

Dining options are plentiful, as well. One of the best meals to be had is at the Solarium Restaurant Bar, which serves fantastic grilled specialties, along with a fresh salad buffet. However, due to new Covid-19 protocols, all buffet service has been suspended. Other dining options include Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Mexican and Italian.

Of course, the picture may be a bit different nowadays, and for the foreseeable future, with Covid-19 protocols being implemented at resorts all over the country.

Brisas has implemented new procedures, including cleanings every two hours, antibacterial gel dispensers throughout the hotel and temperature checks for all employees.

Disinfectant mats are placed at each entrance to the hotel, as well. Guest temperatures are also taken at check-in. Luggage is sanitized, and hand sanitizer and masks are offered.

Guests and staff are encouraged to maintain a 5-foot distance from each other in common areas, restaurants, bars and lounges. No more than three people are allowed in an elevator, with the exception of families.

Pool beds have been separated by 5 feet, as well, and in the gym, all equipment is kept at a distance and undergoes frequent cleaning.

Menus are covered in plastic and cleaned, however the hotel suggests that guests scan the QR code to read menus on mobile devices.

Things may look differently now, as we're all navigating this new travel reality. But Las Brisas Huatulco is a fun, family-friendly option for travelers who are not interested in dull moments.
