Quintana Roo extends tourism restrictions to southern half of the state

Quintana Roo, Mexico, which is home to some of the country's most popular tourism destinations, has expanded restrictions and capacity controls in places like hotels and casinos to cover the entire state, due to a spike in Covid-19 cases.

Prior to this week, the northern part of Quintana Roo had already been operating under the so-called "orange" phase of the state's traffic-light-like reactivation system, which includes major tourist destinations like Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

Under the orange phase the following will be in operation at 50% capacity: Lodging; food and beverage; amusement parks; beaches, parks and archaeological sites; transportation; water parks, marinas and nautical activities; golf courses; car rentals; travel agencies; and guided tours. Nightlife and casinos remain closed.

The new order extends the measure to the southern half of the state, which includes the capital city, Chetumal, and the port city, Mahahual.

The statewide restrictions are in place at least through Feb. 14.
