New York Yankees memorabilia is subject of Naples museum exhibit

|

An extensive collection of memorabilia from five New York Yankee legends has gone on display through May 15 at the Baker Museum at Artis-Naples in Naples, Fla.

The exhibit covers Yankee greats Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Derek Jeter and ranges from items like the sale document that brought Ruth over from the Boston Red Sox to more tabloid-style fare, such as the passport of one Norma Jean DiMaggio, from when Marilyn Monroe was briefly married to the "Yankee Clipper" in 1954.

The memorabilia comes from the collection of Jay H. Baker, a former president of Kohl's Stores. Among other items of note are the cap worn by Gehrig the day he delivered his stirring "luckiest man on the face of the Earth" speech and the uniform worn in 1956 by Don Larsen when he pitched the only perfect game in World Series history.

Also on view is home plate from the original Yankees Stadium. A series of guest appearances related to the exhibition, including one by 2021 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Derek Jeter, is planned with dates to be announced.

In addition to the Baker Museum, Artis-Naples is also home to the Naples Philharmonic.
