A $13 million renovation of McCarran Airport's C Concourse is underway and is expected to be completed by late next summer.

Improvements to Southwest Airlines' base of operations in Las Vegas were designed to establish a more consistent experience throughout Terminal 1, a spokesman said. Gate podiums will be swapped with smaller models to increase the capacity of hold rooms. Easier-to-maintain terrazzo flooring and Gerflor vinyl will replace carpeting. Additional and more convenient device-charging stations will also be installed.

"With the recent decrease in passenger traffic, we were presented with a unique opportunity to complete a major project with minimal impact on travelers," said Rosemary Vassiliadis, Clark County director of aviation.

McCarran reported 1.7 million arriving and departing passengers in August, an uptick from 1.6 million in July but a decrease of 60.8% from August 2019. Total annual traffic through the airport is down 56% from the same time period last year.

The majority of Southwest's flights will operate out of the B Concourse during the work, which began Sept. 30. Staggered gate closures will allow the C Concourse to remain partially operational in case flights need to be assigned there. To ensure they pass through the most convenient TSA checkpoint, passengers should check their flight's departing gate at the McCarran website before arriving.
