Beds in the cargo hold? Airbus is working on it

Sleepers will initially be available on the A330, Airbus said.

Airbus and aircraft interiors supplier Zodiac Aerospace plan to offer bunk-bed sleeping berths in the cargo space of Airbus A330 widebodies by 2020.

The modules are to be easily interchangeable with regular cargo containers, the companies said, allowing airlines to exchange sleepers for cargo space during the typical interval of an aircraft turnaround.

The companies said the sleeping berths would give airlines the opportunity to differentiate themselves by offering additional services to passengers.

"This approach to commercial air travel is a step change towards passenger comfort," said Geoff Pinner, head of Airbus' cabin and cargo program. "We have already received very positive feedback from several airlines on our first mock-ups."

While the sleepers will initially be available on the A330, Airbus said it is also studying the feasibility of offering such compartments on its newest widebody family, the A350.

Airbus and Zodiac said that their experience producing lower-deck crew-rest facilities will help with the project.
