Breeze Airways has been certified by the FAA to fly internationally.

In a morning announcement on Sept. 25, the carrier said it plans to begin its international operations in January, starting slowly with several low-frequency routes to Cancun; Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

"Becoming a U.S. flag carrier is a huge milestone for Breeze, and one that our team members have been working tirelessly on for the last three years," Breeze founder and CEO David Neeleman said in a prepared remark.

Breeze's first international route is set to launch Jan. 7, connecting Norfolk, Va., to Cancun with weekly service on Saturdays.

Weekly Saturday service to Cancun from Charleston, S.C., New Orleans and Providence, R.I., will follow later in January and into February.

Breeze plans to begin Montego Bay service Feb. 11, flying from Tampa on Wednesdays and Saturday and adding Thursday and Sunday service from Raleigh-Durham in North Carolina on March 5.

Also on March 5, Breeze plans to begin its Punta Cana operations, flying from Raleigh on Thursdays and Sundays.

The routes are now bookable on the Breeze website. Providence-Cancun will end for the season on April 25. The remaining routes are currently bookable into May, though they will likely continue through the summer, Breeze spokeswoman McKinnley Matson said.

Breeze will operate the international routes with Airbus A220-300 aircraft. The single cabin planes are equipped with the carrier's first class-style Ascent seats, as well as extra-legroom and standard economy seats.

Breeze said it would open a crew base in Raleigh-Durham early next year to support its international operations.
