The same week Avelo Airlines announced its departure from Burbank, Calif., Breeze Airways announced its arrival.
Breeze plans to enter Burbank and launch service on four of the eight routes that Avelo will discontinue. It will begin flying to Eureka, Calif.; Pasco, Wash.; and Bend and Eugene in Oregon next March. The carrier will fly a fifth route from Burbank to to Provo, Utah.
Though the routes are the first for Breeze from Burbank, the airline does already serve LAX and Orange County Airport.
In its announcement, Breeze made no mention of Avelo, which once served 14 destinations from Burbank. Breeze said that entering Burbank "is a direct response to growing demand for the airline's successful hybrid business model and represents a significant expansion of Breeze's West Coast network."
Avelo said it was pulling out Burbank because it hasn't been able to make West Coast operations profitable.
This isn't the first time Breeze has made transparent moves to target Avelo. In December, Breeze launched service in New Haven, Conn., where Avelo has its largest operation. This month, Breeze is flying seven routes out of New Haven, compared to 20 by Avelo, according to Cirium's flight-schedule data.
