The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey later this summer will begin preliminary construction of a train line into LaGuardia Airport following the project's receipt of environmental approval by the FAA on July 21.

Work will commence with infrastructure-supporting components of the approximately two-mile AirTrain line, such as utility relocation and foundation work.

"Following a competitive selection process, a design-build contractor will be in place next year, and construction is anticipated to be complete in 2025," the port authority said.

The AirTrain, which is budgeted to cost $2.05 billion to construct, will take travelers from the Willets Point subway stop for the 7 train in Queens to LaGuardia, a journey of approximately six minutes. Total trip time from Penn Station or Grand Central Terminal will be 30 minutes or less, the port authority projects.
