Effective July 10, Delta will no longer allow pit bulls to be brought on flights as service or support animals. The airline will also enforce a cap of one support animal per customer.

"These updates, which come as the peak summer travel season is underway, are the direct result of growing safety concerns following recent incidents in which several employees were bitten," the carrier said.

In March, Delta sparked a trend among U.S. carriers by beefing up its documentation requirements for passengers planning to travel with service or emotional support animals. The changes followed an 84% increase in reported incidents involving such animals since 2016, the carrier says.
