LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles International Airport, which closed its
central terminal roadway and parking lot to private vehicles after
the Sept. 11 attacks, reopened the area to private vehicles on Oct.
20, but under a new security program that continues to limit
vehicle use.
Private vehicles entering the central terminal roadway will be
required to park in the central parking structures and are not
allowed to drop-off or pick-up of passengers at the terminals'
curbside.
Airport officials encourage arriving and departing passengers to
use public transportation, including taxis, shuttles and public
buses, rather than private vehicles.
The passenger drop-off facility -- opened after Sept. 11 -- will
remain open north of the intersection of Airport Boulevard and
Arbor Vitae/Westchester Parkway.
Free shuttles take passengers to terminals from the facility.
Airport officials said in a statement that the limits on private
vehicles at LAX -- which are among the strictest in the nation --
are being taken "to minimize the risk of unattended vehicles at the
curbside and to facilitate access by emergency vehicles."
