Norwegian Air will end winter service on some European
routes from Providence, R.I., and Stewart Airport in Newburgh, N.Y.
"In order to better focus on profitability, Norwegian
has decided to seasonally adjust certain routes, including service from
Providence to Edinburgh, Cork and Shannon, as well as Stewart/New York to
Belfast," company spokesman Anders Lindstrom said. "These routes will
operate the summer 2018 season, but not during the quieter winter period due to
lower demand."
Norwegian began flying transatlantic routes from those
markets last summer using narrowbody Boeing 737 Max aircraft.
The carrier will continue to fly year-round
Providence-Dublin service.
The frequency cuts follow Norwegian's January decision to
end service between Hartford, Conn.,and Edinburgh. Norwegian made news last
year by launching transatlantic service to three small-market airports: Hartford,
Providence and Stewart.
Norwegian also won't resume the winter service from
Providence to Guadeloupe and Martinique that it began last year.
"We are looking at other gateways to the islands of
Guadeloupe and Martinique where we see greater demand," Lindstrom said.
