CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- US Airways will become a full member of the Star
Alliance May 4, the alliance said April 26. The alliance had
accepted the US Airways application last year.
US Airways is joining an alliance that already includes Air
Canada, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana, Austrian Airlines, BMI, LOT
Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore
Airlines, Spanair, Thai Airways, United, and Varig Brazilian
Airlines.
Star Alliance CEO Jaan Albrecht said the US Airways addition
"will significantly strengthen our network and product offering,
especially into and out of the Eastern U.S. seaboard and the
Caribbean via its hubs in Philadelphia, Charlotte [N.C.] and
Pittsburgh."
Bruce Lakefield, US Airways' new president and CEO, said the
membership will mark "an important and historic milestone" for the
airline by expanding its global access and frequent flyer benefits,
and boosting revenue.
