Avis Budget reached an agreement with Uber Technologies in
which the car rental company's Zipcar car-sharing division will provide
vehicles for Uber drivers.
Zipcar will provide a "dedicated fleet of four-door
sedans, available for reservation by the hour," Avis Budget said, adding
that Zipcar's technology allows for self-service access.
The Zipcar-Uber deal will launch in Boston, Avis Budget
said, though it did not say when the partnership would begin.
The agreement follows a similar one between Enterprise and
Uber. In late 2015, Enterprise said it would provide cars to Uber drivers at a
discounted rate and have rental fees deducted from Uber earnings.
Hertz started a pilot program with ride-hailing service Lyft
in late 2015, and added a similar program for Uber drivers last year.
Avis Budget acquired Zipcar in 2013 for $500 million.
