The U.S. Department of Transportation has issued an order banning passenger airlines from transporting lithium batteries in cargo holds.

The rule impacts the transport of cellphones and tablets, which are powered by lithium batteries.  Many U.S. airlines already prohibit passengers from checking devices containing lithium batteries. The batteries are highly flammable.
