Calling the Obama administration's deal with Cuba "terrible and misguided," President Donald Trump signed a new Cuba policy into effect on Friday that puts an end to individual people-to-people travel to Cuba.

Trump's policy reverts to the pre-2016 Cuba travel rules which mandate that anyone traveling under the people-to-people category be part of a group.

"The self-directed, individual travel permitted by the Obama administration will be prohibited," the policy states.

"Easing restrictions on travel and trade does not help the people, it only enriches the Cuban regime," Trump said. "The profits flow directly to the military. The regime takes the money and owns the industry."

The new policy does not impact airlines and cruise ships, which will continue to be allowed to operate.

Speaking in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood on Friday, Trump said that the Obama-era policy was "misguided."

"It's hard to think of a policy that makes less sense that the prior administration's terrible and misguided deal with the Castro regime," Trump said. "They made a deal with a government that spreads violence and instability in the region. Those days are over."

Cuban-Americans will be able to continue to visit their family in Cuba and send them remittances.
