SAN FRANCISCO -- A new hotel opened near Union Square and -- unique
to the area -- it is new from the ground up.
The 105-room Orchard Hotel is owned by an Australian
businesswoman and managed by Chicago-based Coastal Hotel Group,
which manages 27 properties in the U.S. and the Virgin Islands.
The Australian, S.C. Huang, formerly owned the Orchard Hotel a
couple of blocks west, at 562 Sutter St. That property was sold and
is now the Hotel Rex, part of the Joie de Vivre chain.
Unlike most new hotels that open in the Union Square area and
many of the Kimpton or Joie de Vivre boutique hotel properties, the
Orchard is not a renovated old San Francisco building.
This Orchard Hotel was built from the ground up at Sutter Street
near Mason, two blocks from Union Square.
The 10-story building has an arched facade, vaulted ceilings and
stone floors. Furnishings in the rooms are in warm colors, with
wood furniture from Bali.
All rooms have a minirefrigerator; iron and ironing board;
coffeemaker; two telephones with dual lines and voice mail; a DVD
and CD player; a 27-inch TV; DSL Internet access, and
bathrobes.
There is a selection of DVDs at the front desk for guests'
complimentary use.
There is no fitness center on site, but the hotel has contracted
with Club One at Union Square for guests to use its center for a
daily use cost of $10.
Room service dining is from V restaurant, the hotel's main floor
dining room. V specializes in California cuisine with French
influences. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner. It is
closed on Mondays.
Room rates start at $209 for singles or doubles and $319 for
suites. All rates include continental breakfast.
The Orchard Hotel has created a package with another Coastal
hotel -- the Harvest Inn in St. Helena in the Napa Valley.
The package, called City Sights to Vineyard Vistas, includes
stays of one or two nights in San Francisco and St. Helena,
continental breakfast and parking.
Prices start at $555 per room for a one-night stay in each
property.
