Antigua's Mango Bay Hotel to shut down Oct. 31

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua -- Mango Bay Hotel & Beach Club here will close its doors on Oct. 31. The closure comes despite "healthy occupancy levels," according to Peter Odle, chairman of Mango Bay Resorts.

Mango Bay Resorts owns and operates the Antigua property, as well as the Mango Bay Resort in Barbados.

"Based on the current conditions of the world, we have decided to close the property," Odle said.

The property will be leased by an undisclosed entity and will reopen at a later date "in another form of tourism," he added. Odle could not immediately supply further details.

All clients booked at Mango Bay in Antigua will be reaccommodated at other properties on the island, including Sandals Antigua and Galley Bay, according to Odle.

Meanwhile, the firm is still awaiting final construction approval to move ahead with plans to add 120 rooms to the Island Inn, a property managed by Mango Bay in Barbados.

The proposed expansion is expected to cost about $20 million.

After the expansion, the property will become Mango Bay Savannah.
