Embassy Suites is apparently redefining the word "suite," as the Hilton-owned brand has introduced a "one-room suite" that is 20% smaller than the brand's traditional guestroom.

Embassy Suites said developers have approached the brand about reducing the size of rooms in response to escalating construction costs.

The brand said the room is "designed to pack more room into a smaller space for today's cost-conscious traveler and hotel developer."

EmbSuites-oneroomrenderThe one-room suite is Embassy Suites' first major room design change since the brand launched 25 years ago.

"While families love all the space they get with a two-room suite, a portion of our guests, mainly business travelers, have told us they don't necessarily need all that space," said Jim Holthouser, Hilton Hotels' global head of full-service brands.

"We've been testing this concept for a while now, and business travelers have been an integral part of the design process. We think we've successfully preserved the spacious feel of the suite while reducing the suite's footprint."

The 14-by-18-foot room includes a walk-in shower; microwave; refrigerator; activity desk; 42-inch, flat-screen TV; and ironing board and iron.

The one-room units are located next to a traditional two-room suite with a connecting door, said Embassy Suites, offering families and groups the option of a second bedroom and living room.

The first Embassy Suites to feature the one-room suite will be a converted federal office building in downtown Buffalo, N.Y.
