Overnight accommodations at the Grand Canyon National Park's South Rim are reopening Dec. 17, following repairs to the area's Transcanyon Waterline.
The park had paused South Rim lodge stays on Dec. 6, due to "a series of significant breaks" in the 12.5-mile water line, said the National Park Service.
The reopening includes Xanterra Travel Collection's El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge and Maswik Lodge as well as Delaware North's Yavapai Lodge and Trailer Village. Phantom Ranch, which is located at the bottom of the canyon and also shuttered on Dec. 6, reopened last week.
Enhanced water restrictions remain in place, with visitors asked to limit their showers to five minutes, turn off faucets while brushing teeth, flush toilets selectively and wash only full loads of laundry.
Only dry camping is permitted, and water spigots at Mather Campground and Desert View Campground remain off. Fire restrictions prohibiting all outdoor wood burning and campfires remain in effect.
Since 2023, the National Park Service has been working on a $208 million rehabilitation of the Transcanyon Waterline, which was built in the late 1960s.
