InterContinental will open in Japan hot springs region

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) will open a hotel in 2019 under its eponymous luxury brand in the Japanese city of Beppu, which is known for its "onsen," or natural hot springs.

The ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa will have 89 rooms and will sit on 20 acres. The retreat, to be developed by Tokyo Century Corp., will feature baths, a spa and a pool, all fed by hot springs.

Beppu, which is on the island of Kyushi, boasts more than 2,400 natural springs, and is a popular tourist destination for residents from South Korea and Taiwan.

The hotel will be the first international luxury-branded hotel in Oita prefecture.

IHG has four InterContinental hotels in Japan.
