Princeville Resort to close for renovations

The Princeville Resort on Kauai, a Starwood hotel, will close this fall for a planned multimillion-dollar renovation, and will reopen as the St. Regis Resort, Princeville.

The resort will close on Sept. 19 and reopen on April 19, 2009, according to Kelly Hoen, general manager of the hotel.

Hoen said economic conditions prompted the decision to close the resort rather than remain open during renovations.

All 366 workers at the luxury hotel will be laid off during the transition and will be offered jobs when the hotel reopens. Koen said the hotel was working with the employees' union, International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 142, to assist the laid-off workers during the closure. The employees joined the union late last December.

Guests who had booked hotel reservations or catering functions that will be affected by the closure will be relocated to an as yet unnamed sister property in Hawaii, Hoen said.

The rebranded hotel will be the first in Hawaii to carry the St. Regis name.
