Sandy Lane in Barbados will close from Aug. 31 to Oct. 3 for an extensive renovation.

The luxury resort last completed a multimillion-dollar overhaul and expansion in 2001.

"We've done some changes since 2001 but not in a comprehensive way,” said Claire Jordan, Sandy Lane’s director of sales and marketing. “Sandy Lane always wants to stay ahead of the curve as a contemporary, elegant resort. This redo will take us to the next level."

The changes include new soft goods, lighting fixtures and bigger flat-screen TVs in the 112 guest rooms. Two new Rolls-Royce limousines will be added for guest transfers. Also, Sandy Lane will be working on a new line of treatments and products in the spa, and new furnishings and decor in public areas.

The resort's Bajan Blue restaurant on the beach level, one of four restaurants on the property, will undergo a total overhaul.

"The name will change, the new design will bring parts of the kitchen and large grill into the dining area, the menu will feature multi-cultural cuisine, seating will be indoors as well as outside and we will offer a wine store right at the restaurant," Jordan said.

Close to 50% of Sandy Lane's business is from the U.K., 30% is from the U.S. and the rest is from Canada and Europe.

Repeat guests comprise 40% of the year-round business and 100% during the Christmas and Easter holidays. Agents and tour operators account for about 35% of all bookings.
