W Hotels is expanding its presence south of the border with two properties set to open, in Mexico City and on the Riviera Maya, by 2014.
The new W Santa Fe will be located in Mexico City's booming Santa Fe business district, less than 20 minutes by car from Toluca Airport and within walking distance of the BBVA Bancomer Convention Center.
The 132-room hotel will be the second W property in the Mexican capital. The existing W Mexico City, which opened seven years ago in the tony neighborhood of Polanco, will undergo a top-to-bottom, multimillion-dollar renovation in concert with the construction of the W Santa Fe, according to General Manager Benoit Racle.
The W Santa Fe will be part of the new, mixed-use Liberty Plaza development, designed by a team that includes internationally renown architect Richard Meier.
The hotel will boast what W Hotels parent company Starwood Hotels & Resorts promises are spectacular city views; several destination bars and restaurants, including W's signature Living Room bar and cafe; a pool deck with an outdoor bar; a 4,000-square-foot Away Spa; a state-of-the-art fitness facility; and 7,800 square feet of meetings and events space.
"W Santa Fe will be a great addition to our existing Starwood portfolio in Mexico," Osvaldo Librizzi, president of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Latin America, said in a statement. "Sante Fe is quickly becoming an important financial and business district for Latin America, and W will bring modern style and dynamic energy to this bustling neighborhood."
Riviera Maya resort
Meier will also help design the 180-room W Retreat & Spa Kanai, located on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula south of Cancun. According to Starwood officials, the W Kanai will be the centerpiece of the new, larger Kanai Resort development, which will include four hotels and a beach club.
"W Kanai will offer guests a new way to escape, amidst innovative design and programming, on the coast of one of the world's most scenic beaches," said Eva Ziegler, global brand leader, W Hotels Worldwide and Le Meridien.
The hotel, to be located six miles from Playa del Carmen and 24 miles from Cancun's airport, will integrate "seamlessly connecting" landscaping and infrastructure, according to Starwood. For example, guestrooms, boasting unobstructed sea views, are being designed as "continuous living areas," with interior rooms merging into exterior decks enclosed by retractable privacy screens and louvers.
The W Kanai will feature a 10,500-square-foot Away Spa and 7,500 square feet of events space.
