The
400-room Wyndham Bermuda Resort & Spa will close Oct. 31 and
reopen in 2009 as the Southampton Beach Resort, according to Alan
Worden, managing director of Windwalker Bermuda, an ownership
consortium financed by Lehman Brothers.
Wyndham Hotels &
Resorts hoisted its management flag at the resort in May 2004 after
taking over from Sonesta.
The current property
is part of the managed hotel portfolio of Wyndham Hotel Management,
which will continue to be involved with the property after it
closes this month, although on a limited basis during the
renovation and construction process.
Larry Magor, managing
director of the Wyndham Bermuda, said that Wyndham regrets "having
to close the hotel for renovations, but the guest experience would
be severely compromised if we were to remain open during the
construction phase. We hope to be able to welcome back many of our
loyal employees when the new hotel is opened."
During the renovation
period, the 32-acre, 45-year-old resort on Bermuda's south shore
will be upgraded to a five-star property, offering a luxury hotel
with condo/hotel units; tennis, squash and exercise facilities; a
pool and beach access; spa amenities; and dining
options.
