The Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park will remain closed until at least mid-day Friday following rock slides Wednesday that forced the evacuation of about 300 guests, according to the Associated Press.
The AP reported that a series of rock slides started at around 5 a.m. Wednesday and were followed by several more around 1:30 p.m. the same day.
No injuries were reported, but at least three cars in the hotel parking lot were damaged. According to the AP, none of the rocks, some the size of a microwave oven, struck the hotel.
The rocks fell from the Royal Arches formation, a rock formation behind the hotel that rises to 1,600 feet. The property was evacuated and closed as a precaution, according to park officials, so that geologists could monitor the formation for the likelihood of additional rock slides.
Guests were allowed to return in small groups late yesterday to retrieve luggage and were then transferred to other properties in and around the park.
