WASHINGTON -- Amtrak said it will introduce special price
discounts and service enhancements for mobility-impaired travelers
by June, as part of an amicable settlement of a class-action
suit.
Under terms of the settlement, Amtrak will offer travelers with
disabilities a 30% discount on accessible sleeper car bedrooms for
the next three years.
Further, the current 15% discount for persons with disabilities
will be extended to their traveling companions.
Amtrak said its reservation policies will be enhanced to provide
better information on train accessibility, and accessible bedrooms
will be reserved for the mobility impaired.
The changes settle a class-action lawsuit filed in 1996 by the
Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund of Berkeley, Calif.,
and Orrick Herrington and Sutcliffe, a San Francisco law firm.
