High Predictions for International Travel in '98

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Nearly all travel agents in an ASTA survey predicted consumer spending on leisure international travel and cruises in 1998 would top or match 1997 levels.

The survey of 306 ASTA agencies, cosponsored by Fodor's Travel Publications, found that nearly two-thirds of respondents expected leisure international bookings to increase over 1997, while 27% said bookings would match it. Two-thirds predicted cruise bookings will increase in 1998, while nearly 21% expect cruise bookings to match 1997.

The survey also found that Orlando, Fla., and London remained the top domestic and international destinations. The next most popular domestic destinations, in descending order, were Las Vegas, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Internationally, other top destinations were Paris, Rome, Cancun and Frankfurt, the survey said.
