Hurricane Isaias is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 storm as it crosses the Bahamas today and on Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Category 2 hurricanes produce winds of up to 110 mph.

Parts of the Bahamas, especially the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island, are still recovering from Hurricane Dorian, which pummeled that area last September.

An advisory posted by the National Hurricane Center said that a dangerous storm surge is expected in portions of the northwestern and central Bahamas through Saturday before the storm moves north toward Florida's east coast.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation is tracking the progress of Isaias, which already caused flooding and blackouts in Puerto Rico while still a tropical storm. It reached hurricane strength early Friday.

Storm warnings are in effect for the central and southeastern Bahamas, including Acklins, Crooked Island, Long Cay, the Inaguas, Mayaguana, the Ragged Islands, Cat Island, the Exumas, Long Island, Rum Cay and San Salvador as well as for the islands in the northwestern Bahamas.
