Travelers now can purchase unlimited quantities of Cuban rum
and cigars in any country where they are sold as long as they are for personal
consumption.
The ban on cigars and rum already had been partially lifted
by the Obama administration in a series of changes that began on Dec. 17, 2014
when President Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced normalized
relations between the two countries.
Travelers returning from Cuba have been allowed to bring
home up to $100 in rum and cigars as part of the $400 allowed for Cuban-made
products and souvenirs.
The latest announcement by the Obama administration takes
effect on Oct. 17, when the rule is published in the Federal Register.
Americans still cannot order Cuban rum and cigars online and
have them shipped to their homes.
