The Costa Allegra, which ran into trouble while sailing in the Indian Ocean late last month, will be sold or scrapped, Carnival Corp. Chairman Micky Arison told investors during the company’s first-quarter earnings call on Friday.

The Allegra was damaged by an engine-room fire on Feb. 27 as it was crossing the Indian Ocean, and eventually was towed to the Seychelles on March 1.

Costa is replacing the Allegra with the Voyager for Europe cruises from France, starting March 18. With the move, Costa canceled the Voyager’s originally scheduled Red Sea cruises.

The 1,000-passenger Allegra, a former container ship, was acquired by Costa in 1990. It was rebuilt as a cruise ship and entered service in 1992.
