HAVANA -- Cuba's Council of State named Manuel Marrero Cruz to the post of minister of tourism, replacing Ibrahim Ferradaz Garcia.

Cruz formerly was executive vice president of Gaviota Tours, an inbound tour operator based in Havana.

Ferradaz Garica, who held the tourism post for three years, "will be assigned other responsibilities," according to a report from the Council of State.

In his first day on the job, Marrero Cruz met briefly in Havana Feb. 13 with Jean Holder, secretary general of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO). Holder was in Cuba to meet with tourism officials regarding the CTO's upcoming Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism, set for April 27 to 30 in the Cuban capital.

"Cruz is very interested in Cuba's relationship with the Caribbean community," Holder said.
