A few weeks from now, on Nov. 23 to be exact, Singapore Airlines will cease its nonstop Newark-Singapore service, a remarkable 9,600-mile segment that ranks as the longest commercial airline route in the world. The scheduled block time is 18 hours, 30 minutes.

Launched in 2004, the operation has been conducted with Airbus A340-500 long-range aircraft configured for just 100 business-class passengers.

The end of this remarkable service will mean the honor of operating the industry's longest flight will pass to Qantas, which operates a 747-400 nonstop from Sydney to Dallas, a mere 8,600 miles. Kudos to all.
