Santa came early to Montenegro this December when Unesco added Boka Navy, a traditional heritage organization, to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The folkloric dance troupe is based in Kotor, a walled medieval seaport town on the Adriatic coast whose bay is already a Unesco World Heritage site.

The accolade is just one more nod to a destination that is making a splash on the international stage after years of being overshadowed by some of its Balkan neighbors.

One thing's for sure -- upscale hotel companies are taking notice.

Where to stay in Montenegro

One&Only Portonovi, for example, made a splashy entry this spring on Kotor Bay.

The 60-acre, 123-room resort features a posh Chenot Espace spa, dining overseen by Michelin-starred chef Giorgio Locatelli and a private marina.

When it comes to luring high-end clients, the new One&Only will be competing with some well-established properties nearby, including the 99-room Allure Palazzi Kotor Bay Hotel, with a private dock and beachfront access, and the 111-room The Chedi Lustica Bay, with a private beach and infinity pool.

The Regent Porto Montenegro https://www.ihg.com/regent/hotels/us/en/porto-montenegro/tivpm/hoteldetail on Boka Bay offers views of Lovcen Mountain as well as 175 rooms, one- to three-bedroom suites and penthouses at Venezia Wing and Regent Pool Club Residences.

Tours that touch Montenegro

Meanwhile, Montenegro is beginning to appear with more frequency on tour company itineraries.

Backroads, for example, is featuring two Multi-Adventure Croatia to Montenegro tours -- one "Easygoing" for people like myself who prefer a dolce tempo pace (Backroads lingo for slower travel and e-bike assistance) -- both of which also include kayaking and sailing.

G Adventures offers several multidestination tours that include Montenegro, some of which make the most of the robust sailing traditions of the destination.

As to cruise lines, it would almost be easier to cite the ones that don't stop in Montenegro -- but if Viking, Oceania, Azamara, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are on your clients' wish lists, they are among those including the destination on their Adriatic cruises.
