The 42nd annual Prince Lot Hula Festival will take place at the Iolani Palace July 20-21.
The Prince Lot Hula Festival is the largest noncompetitive hula celebration in Hawaii. It honors Prince Lot Kapuaiwa, who helped revive hula on the Islands in the 1850s.
There will be special performances by award-winning halau hula (schools), including a 90-dancer show by Halau I Ka Wekiu on Sunday that will serve as a special tribute to fire goddess Pele. Twenty-two troupes will perform over the weekend, showcasing both ancient and contemporary styles of hula. The festival will also feature a Hawaiian-themed craft fair and cultural demonstrations.
The event, which attracts thousands of attendees each year, is free to attend, and visitors are encouraged to bring beach chairs and mats.
