With Kenya facing a redo of its Aug. 8 election later this month, the U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert, warning of possible violence linked to the repeat residential election. The alert states that rallies, demonstrations and protests may occur with little notice. "Even events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence," the alert reads.

Kenyan tour operators said they have not received many cancellations but report they have heard concerns from travelers. Devan Jobanputra, Travel 'n Style, said: "We have clarified that the itineraries in Kenya for travelers don't pass through the areas mentioned in the U.S. travel alert."

Jobanputra added all wildlife conservation areas, beaches and countryside destinations are safe. "There are only advisories against visiting a few low-income areas and to avoid any gatherings in any city," he said, adding he would like to urge all travelers to continue monitoring the situation before canceling their plans.

Roni Madhvani, director of the Madhvani Group, added that while most Kenyans are confident of a peaceful election process and outcome just as they were with the earlier elections, there has been some apprehension and concern from overseas travelers. He said: "This has unfortunately affected the bookings for the sector, and we do hope that once the outcome is known confidence returns and visitors continue to enjoy Kenya's fantastic offering."
