Tengile MalaMala Collection launched on April 7 as an owner-led, community-partnered safari brand uniting five lodges and camps along the Sand River in South Africa's Sabi Sand and MalaMala Game Reserve, with a sixth property set to open in December.
The collection is owned by the N'wandlamhari Communal Property Association alongside the Saad family (father-daughter duo Stephen and Savannah Saad), making it one of South Africa's few community-partnered eco-tourism enterprises.
The five operational properties are all located along the Sand River, with a fenceless boundary into Kruger National Park. Each property carries a distinct character:
• Tengile River Lodge is design-forward with nine river-facing suites.
• Rattray's Lodge offers eight private-garden suites with a heritage focus.
• Kirkman's Kamp preserves 1920s safari character across 12 family-friendly cottages.
• MalaMala Camp MalaMala Camp has 10 luxury suites, eight bedrooms and one single suite, offering a range of accommodation types for families, groups and solo travelers.
• Sable Camp is the little sister to MalaMala Camp and has seven suites, including the two-bedroom Lion's Den, with shared pools and viewing decks.
When the Khensani River Lodge (khensani meaning "gratitude" in Shangaan) debuts at the end of this year, it will feature nine standalone suites, each with a private plunge pool and viewing deck, anchored by a main house which offers a spa and library.
Some uncommon activities
Beyond twice-daily game drives and bush walks, the collection offers some genuinely unusual add-ons. Guests can participate in annual rhino dehorning, a carefully managed anti-poaching measure; join guided runs through the bush; or try catch-and-release fishing on the Sand River. At MalaMala Camp and Kirkman's Kamp, children's programs include tracking walks, bush bingo and basic survival skills.
Dining across the collection centers on seasonal, open-fire cooking using local produce. Guests can eat on riverside decks, in candlelit bomas under the stars, on private suite terraces or in relaxed lounge settings. Wine lists draw on South Africa's leading labels alongside smaller independent vineyards.
Rates are fully inclusive of meals, game drives and airstrip transfers. Lodge rates start from $2,528 per person, per night at Rattray's Lodge and from $2,747 at Tengile River Lodge. Camp rates start from approximately $1,482 per person per night at MalaMala Camp.
