King Kong ride at Universal Orlando won't be on a track

|

Universal Orlando has unveiled details of the ride vehicle that will ferry guests through the attraction "Skull Island: Reign of Kong."

Scheduled to open this summer at the Islands of Adventure theme park, Reign of Kong will be one of the largest attractions at Universal Orlando, the resort says.

Guests will experience the ride on a 17-ton expedition truck that independently navigates the jungle-themed environment of the attraction using positioning technology. It will not be on a track.

Forty feet long, 13 feet tall and 10 feet wide, the truck can seat 72 people. Each of its wheels is 45 inches around.

Though the vehicle is actually driverless, one of five characters will play the role of the driver during each trip through the attraction. The characters are a cowgirl, an adventure-seeking cousin of a movie director, an ex-con, a PhD paleontology student and a mystical descendant of the natives of who originally settled Skull Island. Guests will enjoy different experiences with each guide.

The truck’s front and back axles move independently, allowing it to make sharp turns and pull off complicated maneuvers, Universal said.
